Filial piety is the foundation of Confucianist thought. Confucianism is a system of right behavior in society from the smallest unit to the largest. It begins with a relationship of respect and care between parent and child (filial piety). It’s often thought of as respect for parents, but it works both ways. If a parent cares for a child and a child respects a parent, it encourages each one to keep doing the same. From there it goes to teacher/student, husband/wife, employer/employee, up to king/subjects. If this reciprocal relationship breaks down somewhere, it will travel up or down and eventually the whole country will fall apart, even to the extent of nature/land.
