Question by Onica *: What goes on when a hockey team puts a player on their protected list?
My friend got me into hockey this year and I went to quite a few USHL games with her this year. I’m not really familiar with the rules and all that stuff. I was just wondering what goes on or what it means when a team protects a player?

It typically means that the team is claiming signing rights to the player. Leagues differ but it will give the team some period of time to arrange a contract with the player, after which he will go back to being a free agent, able to sign with any team.

I agree to the one below. They are protecting in a sense that the team is claiming a signing right to the player!
