What would have been your top ten names 100 years ago?

Question by Emmy Jo: What would have been your top ten names 100 years ago?
1. What are your top 10 favorite baby names? Please list five full names for girls and five full names for boys. (For the purpose of this question, it’s best to pick names in the U.S. top 1000, so if a name you like is not in the top 1000, try to replace it with a similar one that is.)

2. Now look up the 2009 popularity of each name, and switch it out with one that was ranked the same in 1909. For example, Clara Joy is one of my favorite girls’ names. In 2009, Clara ranked #199 and Joy ranked #527. In 1909, the names that ranked #199 and #527 were Anita and Odell, so the “100-years-ago” version would be Anita Odell. Find the “100-years-ago” name for each favorite on your list. What does this new list look like?

3. Which is your favorite name from the new list? Your least favorite? Are there any from this new list that you would actually consider using?

Here is a link to the SSA website where you can find popularity data:

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

For an example, here’s my list (2009 version –> 1909 version):

1. Clara Joy –> Anita Odell
2. Eleanor Ruth –> Claire Aileen
3. Gwendolyn Eve –> Margret Diana
4. Ivy Caroline –> Frankie Rosa
5. Eliza Violet –> Odessa Naomi
6. Julius Arthur –> Andy Royal
7. Wesley Bennett –> Clayton Pedro
8. Frederick Daniel –> Hal Charles
9. Theodore Charles –> Lynn Frederick
10. Elliot John –> Myron Howard
Okay, I’m jealous. You guys got way better ones than I did. My favorites of yours so far were:
Zella Francis (love!)
Olivia Molly
Elsie Katherine
Ella Antoinette
Flora Daisy
Anne Viola (love!)
Odessa Elisabeth
Katherine Alice
Rosalind Francis
Ruth Eugenie
Mina Estelle
Julius Harold
Robert Julius
Felix Arthur
Felix Early (so intriguing)
Edward Thomas

The two that made me laugh the most were Rollie Dock and Olan Alan.

And Fairy Dovie Madeline … doesn’t that just sound like the name some British celebrity would choose for his child?
Kaylee — You got good ones! I love Ella Ruth and Rosa Estelle. Those actually sound like really cute twin names.

    Fun question Emmy Jo :)

    So, I’ve had to totally reinvent my top 5 for each gender {girls especially!}, but here are the names that I like most that feature on the top 1000 list:

    1…
    Iris Genevieve – {317, 288}
    Alice Lucille – {258, 570}
    Matilda Violet – {762, 141}
    Vera Edith – {893, 846}
    Eloise Ruby – {917, 108}

    Oliver Felix – {98, 339}
    Silas Finley – {254, 772}
    Reuben Charles – {895, 64}
    Jude Frederick – {182, 536}
    Henry Mathias – {71, 786}

    2…
    Iris Genevieve ——→ Zella Francis
    Alice Lucille ———→ Callie Ludie
    Matilda Violet ——-→ Ardella Naomi
    Vera Edith ———-→ Concepcion Annabell {lol}
    Eloise Ruby ———→ Eugenie Estelle

    Oliver Felix ———-→ Julius Al
    Silas Finley ———-→ Erwin Ewell
    Reuben Charles —→ Agustin Frederick
    Jude Frederick —–→ Forrest Hal
    Henry Mathias ——→ Melvin Johny

    3…
    My favourites are probably Eugenie Estelle and Julius Al (If I can change the spellings a bit, Augusten Frederick would be my favourite!). I sort of like Zella Frances too, in a GP kind of way.

    My least favourites.. jeez.. all of them lol.. Concepcion is definitely the worst of the lot!! Concepcion as in Conception? Ugh what a terrible name.. and why anyone would need to be reminded that their parents had sex is beyond me. As for the boys, Erwin Ewell reminds me of a Looney Tunes character for some reason, and Forrest Hal and Melvin Johny are pretty horrid too. I adore Julius and Frederick though ♥

    I probably wouldn’t use any of the combos.. I’d use Julius or Frederick on a son, and maybe Frances as a middle name, but that’s it!

    Great question! ♥

    1.

    Girls:
    Felicity Kate
    Emmeline Belle
    Rae Gabriella
    Allison Leah
    Violet Natalie

    Boys:
    Nathaniel Max
    Justin Taylor
    Zachary Benjamin
    William Charles
    Timothy Jackson

    2.

    Felicity Kate, #782 and #159: Lea Nina.

    Emmeline Belle (For popularity’s sake, Emma Noelle), #2 and #434: Helen Corrine.

    Rae (Or Raegan, which I’m not all for— considering that Rae itself pushes the trendy limit) Gabriella, #377 and #33: Arline Edith.

    Allison Leah, #30 and #28: Virginia Martha.

    Violet Natalie, #147 and #16: Ollie Edna.

    Nathaniel (Or Nathan) Max, #24 and #104: Louis Hugh.

    Justin Taylor, #46 and #298: Leonard Tommy.

    Zachary Benjamin, #53 and #20: Floyd Raymond.

    William Charles, #5 and #64: Robert Frederick.

    Timothy Jackson, #110 and #25: Virgil Carl.

    3.

    1. Lea Nina: I don’t like how they both end with A, but individually I like both names. I’d consider.

    2. Helen Corrine: Again, I don’t like they end with the same sound. I’ve never been especially fond of these names.

    3. Arline Edith: Arline is nice, but I’d rather use it as a middle name. Same with Edith, though probably not a considerable option.

    4. Virginia Martha: I can’t get a break with these same-sound endings. I’d possibly conisder both as middle names.

    5. Ollie Edna: I had to double check when I saw that Ollie was in the girl column. Interestingly enough, the same ranked boy name was Ira, and I thought I had mentally switched them by accident. I don’t like this name, I think “Ollie Edna” sounds like a cartoon character.

    6. Louis Hugh: I’ve never really liked either name, but they’re okay.

    7. Leonard Tommy: I prefer Leonard as a middle name, though I really like Tommy when Thomas is used as a full name.

    8. Floyd Raymond: The two Y’s bother me. Floyd reminds me of a cartoon on disney channel from when I was younger, so I’m not too fond of this combination

    9. Robert Frederick: I like this one, but it sounds common, I feel like there is at least one bad person associated with this name. Maybe if there were two middle names?

    10. Virgil Carl: I can’t take this one seriously. Carl never seemed very formal to me, and Virgil is the name of my pet mouse.

    Favorite: Lea Nina. I love Leah and am learning to appreciate Nina.

    Least favorite: Ollie Edna. MAYBE separately. When used as a middle. Maybe.

    Mix-match combos: Arline Lea and Robert Leonard sound nice to me.

    ——–

    Really fun :) Took a while too! It’ll be funny in 100 years, when Ashley and Jayden are “old”.

    6. Marley Rose –> 149, 352 –> Ora Georgie

    5. Harry Elliott –> 650, 350 –> Rollie Dock

    Must say, I prefer the 2009 versions! Selma Hilda, Inez Zella, Chester Hal, Rollie Dock not so much! But I do like Alice, Libbie, Georgie and Ursula :)

    MY LIST {2009 —-> 1909}

    * Delilah Ruby Grace —-> Muriel Estelle Rose
    * Carolina Ivy Rose —-> Loraine Frankie Georgie
    * Violet Catherine Alice —-> Naomi Bonnie Callie
    * Matilda Olive Hazel —-> Ardella Joe Clarice
    * Annabel Georgia Daisy —-> Fairy Dovie Madeline

    * Nathaniel Eric Charles —-> Lloyd Gerald Frederick
    * Sebastian Henry Jack —-> Oscar Melvin Donald
    * Gabriel Adam Jacob —-> Fred Claude John
    * Xavier Isaac Greyson —-> Bernard Anthony Odis
    * Julian Thomas Reid —-> Edwin Clifford Alan

    Wow. Overall, that’s a bunch of thoroughly awful names. I guess I’d pick Muriel Estelle Rose and Edwin Clifford Alan as my favourites. Bernard Anthony Odis and Loraine Frankie Georgie would be my least favourites.

    There are some individual names I’d consider using – Rose, Bonnie, Callie, Madeline, Oscar and Edwin – but none of those combinations are for me!

    I did have to alter my combos a bit. Carolina Ivy Blair became Carolina Ivy Rose, Matilda Poppy Hazel became Matilda Olive Hazel, Annabel Georgia May became Annabel Georgia Daisy and Xavier Isaac Grey became Xavier Isaac Greyson.

  5. Rachel on Holidays on December 5, 2011 at 2:57 am

    Boys:
    1. Foster Reid (Foster was not on the top 1000, so I used Carter) Carter Reid –> Stanley Allen
    2. Eli Harrison –> Eldon Malcolm
    3. Hunter Reid –> Peter Alan
    4. Weston Parker –>
    5. Theodore Vaughn –> Lynn Lige

    Girls:
    1. Willow Maire –> Rosetta Melvina
    2. Emaline Reid (Emaline and Reid were not on the Top 1000 list, so I used Emily Ruth) Emily Ruth –> Anna Aileen
    3. April Mackenzie –> Isabell Betty
    4. McKenna Noelle –> Elenora Mercedes
    5. Evelyn Claire –> Elsie Katherine

    Some of those name combinations aren’t half bad, especially the boy ones! I don’t mind some of the girl names, but some of the first-middle combinations don’t sound good together, but the names are alright.

    That was fun!

  6. recĸleѕѕly reaѕonaвle on December 5, 2011 at 3:15 am

    1. Gwendolyn Iris — 585, 317 — Margret Zella
    2. Matilda Claire — 762, 53 — Ardella Katherine
    3. Anna Rosemary — 29, 721 — Bertha Elenora
    4. Johanna Lily — 474, 18 — Magdalene Evelyn
    5. Norah Josephine — 344, 201 — Lily Margie
    6. Cedric Matthew — 702, 13 — Nat Willie
    7. Damon Harry — 519, 650 — Doyle Rollie
    8. Jude Elias — 182, 158 — Forrest Percy
    9. Adrian James — 58, 18 — Russell Arthur
    10. Samson Reid — 882, 348 — Olan Alan (ROFL)

    Phew, haha, I’m still recovering from that Olan Alan disaster, lol. Seriously, there seem to be some pretty decent names on that 1909 list, but why did I have to end up with the strangest ones?

    So, to question three… My two favorites are Ardella Katherine and Forrest Percy. I do not like the name Ardella at all, but it seems the most decent and flowing combo out of the ones I got. I do, however, like Forrest Percy (yeah, I’m a Harry Potter nerd :P ). It’s just kind of cute in a way.

    There are some other names I got that I like seperately, but not together. For example both Magdalene and Evelyn aren’t too bad, but they make the worst combo ever. Margret Zella isn’t too awful, either, but I’ve never been able to warm up to the name Margret (or any version of it.) Zella is interesting, though. Lily, of course, is a pleasant surprise, (Lily Margie is actually kind of cute… kind of.) and I also like Arthur from the boy’s list.

    But then there are the truly awful parts. Bertha Elenora? You can hear the dust on that one! And then, Nat Willie, and Doyle Rollie… I do not like those nickname-y names people had going for guys back then. Russell has always seemed so heavy a name to me, I don’t like it at all. And then there’s Olan Alan *subsides into giggles”

    Great question!

    1. Katherine Sienna (60, 196) – Ella Antoinette
    2. Lydia Juliette (118, 439) – Nancy Reva
    3. Sierra Christine (198, 623) – Cecelia Vina
    4. Cassandra Elizabeth (327, 11) – Melba Florence
    5. Keira Juliana (140, 154) – Lizzie Rachel
    6. Lukas Felix (245, 339) – Ross Al
    7. Arthur Bradley (376, 197) – Royal Don
    8. Tristan Isaac (80, 40) – Leon Anthony
    9. Matthias Jude (765, 182) – Casimer Forrest
    10. Oliver Joseph (98, 16) – Julius Harold

    My fave girls name from my new list is Lizzie Rachel, although I would only use Lizzie as a nickname for Elizabeth and I prefer the spelling Rachael to Rachel.
    My fave boys name is Casimer Forrest, although I would never use it. It sounds really cool though!

    My least favourite girls name from my new list is Cecelia Reva. I prefer Cecelia spelled Cecilia, and I like Cecily more. I’ve never heard Reva before, and it just doesn’t sound that pretty to me, as I love long, flowing names.
    My least favourite boys name is Royal Don, as I would never think of Royal as a name, it is just a word really, and Don sounds a bit plain and boring to me.

    I would consider using Elizabeth Rachel with the nickname Lizzie, and Ella Antoinette is very pretty. I also love Florence, and Cecilia is pretty.

    For boys, I like Ross and Leon. Anthony is ok but a bit dull. Casimer is very cool but I probably wouldn’t use it. Julius is quite nice, but not the best.

    Fun!

    Hm..a lot of these names definitely are not my style. I actually dislike most of them and find that I wouldn’t use almost all of them. My least favorite from each gender would be Ora Lester and Georgianna Frankie. Both are way out of my style and I’m not a fan of the names. My favorites would have to be Katherine Alice and Russell Jesse. I actually adore Katherine Alice and know that I would use it-as I already have a daughter named Alice! Katherine’s also very beautiful. I’m not big on Jesse, but it’s okay, I suppose. Russell, on the other hand, I love it! :)

    1| Eliza Jane –> Odessa Elisabeth.
    2| Delia (not ranked, replaced with Delilah) Catherine –> Muriel Bonnie.
    3| Alice Madeleine –> Callie Christina.
    4| Lorelei Claire –> Lennie Katherine.
    5| Norah Charlotte –> Lily Mae.

    ~My favorite is probably Lily Mae. I would prefer Lillian as the full name, but I still feel like Lily can stand her own. Mae isn’t a particular favorite of mine, especially in the middle slot, but I can respect it. It’s a pretty name, especially by today’s standards, but Lily is just too common for my tastes. Lennie Katherine was a close second. I have to admit, I find Lennie rather cute on a girl, even though I’m fully aware it’s a boy’s name, and a nickname, at that. However, I like that Katherine was put in the middle, as a feminine classic. I would never consider using this one, though.
    ~My least favorite without a doubt is Muriel Bonnie. Muriel has got to be one of the most unattractive girl names I have ever heard. Ick! I’m not fond of Bonnie, either, as I feel like it’s too “middle-aged woman” sounding, and I don’t like how nickname-y it is. Put together, this combo is totally not my style. At all.

    1| Holden Lucas –> Spencer Alfred.
    2| Reece Matthew –> Morgan Willie.
    3| Easton Asher –> Nick Felix.
    4| Fletcher Dean –> Lindsay Harrison.
    5| Julian Thomas –> Edwin Clifford.

    ~Well, Morgan is definitely my favorite — but Willie doesn’t flow well at all in the middle. I like Spencer, as well, but aren’t so crazy about Alfred.. but I suppose I can respect it. I don’t really know how to feel about Lindsay.. even though it’s strictly for girls today, I can actually see it growing for me on a boy, and I love Harrison in the middle. I guess I might actually say that that combo is my favorite, but with Lindsay being so gone to the girls nowadays, I couldn’t ever put that name on my son.
    ~My least favorite is Nick Felix. Nick is just too, too common of a nickname (like Matt, Jake or Sam) and I especially don’t like him standing his own. I’ve never liked Felix, and he doesn’t sound good with Nick.

    ♂Cole Joseph Nathaniel → Alvin Harold Lloyd
    ♂Jude Micah Brendan → Forrest Archie Alton
    ♂Reid William Elijah → Alan Robert Richard
    ♂Pierce Matthew Riley → Maxwell Willie Alexander

    In 2009: Leah, Sage, Violet, Rose, Delilah, Cole, Jude, Pierce, & Noah.
    In 1909: Martha, Cassie, Naomi, Georgie, Muriel, Alvin, Forrest, Alan, Maxwell, & Edward.

    The names from 1909 are not really my style, so naturally I would prefer my names. My favorites would be; Georgie Laura Viola & Maxwell Willie Alexander. I don’t love Georgie, but it is alright and better than some of the other names on there. I am iffy on Laura and Viola. I don’t love either and the flow is not very good. On the other hand, I love the name Maxwell. Willie is a bit childish and Alexander is too common for me. My least favorites are Martha Allie Willie & Forrest Archie Alton. I have always loathed the name Martha, just because names that end in ‘tha’ just are completely not my style. The flow of Allie and Willie is horrible, and they are both nicknames. I would prefer Marcy Allison Willa. I have the flow of Forrest Archie Alton. Alliteration is terrible in a name, in my opinion. I don’t mind Forrest and Alton, but Archie are horrible to me. I would have liked to see Forrest Julian Alton.

    Very interesting game! I wouldnt consider using any of the combos from my list because I don’t this they flow well AT ALL together, but some of the individual names that came up are actually names that are presently on my list or that I am fond of.

    Fun Question! :)

    2009 → → 1909

    GIRLS: {I want to do ten girl names if that’s ok?}
    1. Liliana Scarlett 120, 169 → Mable Isabel.
    2. Juliette Aurora 439, 217 → Reva Faye.
    3. Clara Emmeline 199, {Emmeline is not in top 1,000 for 2009 so I’ll use Emma} 2 → Anita Helen.
    4. Anneliese Ivy {Anneliese was only ranked in 2005 in the last ten yrs so I’ll just use that} 918, 320→ Fleta Frankie. LOL!
    5. Cora Madeleine 303, 331 → Joan Christina.
    6. Arabella Kate 447, 159 → Cordelia Nina.
    7. Gemma Isabel 568, 110 → Dorotha Flora.
    8. Adeline May 351, {I’m going to use Violet instead since I like that too, May is not ranked in the top 1,000 for 2009} 141→ Carmela Naomi.
    9. Serena Belle 339, {Belle was not ranked in the the top 1,000 for 2009 so I’ll use Bella which is similar} 58 → Cecil Marion.
    10. Viviana Pearl 433, 995 → Dorthy Coral.

    BOYS:
    1. Rowan Thomas 336, 57 → Al Clifford.
    2. Jude Elliot 182, 297 → Forrest Myron.
    3. Oliver Preston 98, 120 → Julius Gordon.
    4. Declan Rhys 308, 577 → Fredrick Burt.
    5. Asher James 165, 18 → Felix Arthur
    {I don’t have ten for boys}

    My favorite from the girls list is Mable Isabel {even though it doesn’t flow very well} & my favorite from the boys list is Felix Arthur even though I really like Julius too but I hate Gordon. I would use Isabel, Coral {maybe} Flora {maybe}, Julius, & Arthur {maybe}. I also like Cordelia, Naomi, Mable, Marion, & Felix but would never use them. My least favorites are Forrest Myron, Al Clifford, Fleta Frankie, & Reva Faye.

    Least Favorites from New List:
    – Esta Lude, Georgia Christina and JIMMIE Lauren. Yuck!
    – Alfred Spencer. I despise the name Alfred.

    1. Eva Josephine –> Genevieve Margie
    2. Violet Noelle –> Naomi Mercedes
    3. Genevieve Isabel {originally Genevieve Isadora} –> Francis Flora
    4. Lauren Felicity {originally Laurel Felicity} –> Viola Lea

    8. Elliot Rowan –> Myron Ike
    9. Theodore Isaac –> Lynn Anthony
    10. Collin Thomas –> Irving Clifford

    This is a really clever idea! I didn’t think I would really like any of the names, but I actually love Arthur Julius and Evelyn Claire. (: Lynn Anthony is nice, too. I also like Genevieve, Flora, and Viola. ♥

    4. Keira June –> Lizzie Bethel
    5. Eva Corinne –> Genevieve Ouida

    7. Jude Elias –> Forrest Percy
    8. Vincent Jeffrey –> Sidney Ollie
    9. Griffin Dennis –> Owen Neil
    10. Miles Jason –> Emil Chester

    Favorites: Well, none of the combinations I like except for Fredrick Arthur. Some individual names I like are Rosa, Bonnie, Genevieve, and Neil.

    Least favorites: Out of the full combinations, I really don’t like Bonnie Allie, Sidney Ollie and Owen Neil. They just don’t flow. Individual names – Bethel, Lizzie (not as a full name), Allie (not as a full name), Sidney, Ollie (not as a full name), Emil and Chester.

    None of these names I would ever consider using myself… MAYBE Bonnie because I’ve always thought it was a sweet name. Genevieve is the only other name I really think is nice, but I’d never use it myself.

    1 – Iris Genevieve –> Zella Francis (love!)
    2 – Vera Katherine –> Concepcion Ella (LOL)
    3 – Audrey Susanna –> Sarah Berneice
    4 – Marian Charlotte –> Lila Mae
    5 – Rosaline Willow –> Rilla Rosetta
    6 – Dean Charles –> Harrison Frederick (really like this one)
    7 – Nathaniel Davis –> Lloyd Winston
    8 – Calvin Marshall –> Elijah Basil (interesting!)
    9 – Dorian Walter – Wilton Wm (what is Wm?)
    10 – Silas William – Erwin Robert

    Favorites: Zella Francis and Harrison Frederick. Also like Elijah Basil and Lila Mae is cute in a very Southern way.

    Least Favorites: Rilla Rosetta paired together is pretty bad. Concepcion is pretty awful to name a person. Not quite sure what Wm is meant to be, but Wilton Wm is pretty bad.

    This has got me really quite liking Zella, actually. And my one grandmother on my father’s side is Francis. Hmm… intriguing option!

  28. Scarlett, Arianna and Jude on December 5, 2011 at 2:10 pm

    1. Scarlett Nicole —- Isabel Rosie

    7. Luke William —- Herman Robert
    8. Cameron Elias —- Jesse Percy
    9. Ian Christopher —- Jessie Henry
    10. Mitchell Ryan —- Dwight Clarence

    I love the name Jesse but Percy and Henry don’t sound all the great with Jesse. Isabel Rosie and Lillie Sadie are also adorable!
    Herman and Dwight are pretty bad. Lula is a little wierd.

    1+2. (2009 -> 1909)
    Aurora Lily Evelyn -> Faye Evelyn Elsie
    Delilah Annabelle Kate -> Muriel Geraldine Nina
    Belle (I had to use Bella) Arianna Vivienne -> Marion Lillie Ferne
    Geneva Lucy May -> Francis Susie Bernice (I used Genevieve and Maya)
    Luna Ruby Joy -> Merle Estelle Odell

    Oliver William Avery -> Julius Robert Samuel (Avery was 32 for females, so I used 32)
    Nathaniel Adam Joseph -> Lloyd Claude Harold
    Blake Sawyer Charles -> Victor Adolph Frederick
    Beau Eric Jasper -> Scott Gerald Isiah
    Roman August Jack -> Ervin Pablo Donald

    3. My favourites are Marion Lillie Ferne and Victor Adolph Frederick. My least favourites are Francis Susie Bernice and Scott Gerald Isiah. I liked a lot of the single names, rather than the combinations, such as Evelyn, Elsie, Nina, Estelle and Pablo. The only full combinations I love are Marion Lillie Ferne, Victor Adolph Frederick and Julius Robert Samuel. I would think about using Evelyn, Pablo, Lillie (Lily), Victor, Frederick, Julius, Robert and Samuel.

    Great question!

    After some major reconfiguring to my top names, several were not in the top 1000, here we go…

    girls:

    Amelie RaeJeanne (middle name after my grandmother – using Raegan) 675 / 377
    Henrietta Audrey Elaine (using Helena for Henrietta) 575 / 49 / 767
    Cadence Bryony (switching Brinley for Bryony) 222 / 778
    Maryn Francesca (using Maren for Maryn) 963 / 470
    Norah Clare 344 / 718

    boys:

    Domminic Josef (substituting Dominic Joseph) 81 /16
    Jensen Everett 832 / 320
    Abel Cohen 328 / 323
    Augustus James 797 / 18
    Seamus Nolan 813 / 122

    in 1909:
    Hilma Arline
    Ethelyn Sarah Josefa
    Sophia Goldia
    Alida Estell
    Lily Therese

    Milton Harold
    Reinhold Taft
    Joel Major
    Ricardo Arthur
    Edith Alex

    My favorite combo is Lily Therese. Lily is too popular for me but I think the combination sounds nice. Two that I find interesting but would never use are Ethelyn Sarah Josefa and Reinhold Taft, there is just something kind of intriguing about them.

    My least favorite combo is Sophia Goldia. Sophia is way too popular and it sounds terrible with Goldia.
