Question by Lara: How do you get your children to sleep the night before exciting events?
For example, trips, parties, Christmas! My five year old is going to a ballet tomorrow for her friend’s birthday and although bedtime was at 7:30, she is simply laying in her bed staring at the ceiling. I went in and inquired as to why she hadn’t fallen asleep, and she told me she just is too excited! I know she needs a good night’s rest because it will be a long day tomorrow. What do you do for your children when they are too excited to fall asleep?

I usually tell them that tomorrow won’t come unless they go to sleep. It can still take a while for them to fall asleep, but they usually try harder.

Now, I know this will be frowned upon by certain persons, and I shall be given “thumbs,” but. When my daughter Portia Windsor Pontefract-Stuyvesant cannot sleep because she is too excited about the little charter flight to Toronto to catch the opera, I sometimes make her a sort of children’s kir royale; sparkling white grape juice with a dash of Chambord liqueur — she loves it, and it sends her straight off to slumberland.

Where is yours seeing the ballet? Portia likes it best when we see it in Russia.

I’m only fifteen, but I can give you what I do :) I’m much like your daughter, I can never ever sleep before a trip or Christmas because I’m just too psyched!

I normally put my iPod on the sleep timer option, though I’m not sure if this is okay with you. If not, give your daughter some warm milk with honey. It really calms them down :)

I usually get them to do some physical activity a few hours before bedtime, let them take a long warm bath where they can play a little while, then send them off to bed. They still are often awake a little longer then usual, but they still drop right off in time to get plenty of rest. At this hour, you can always fix her some warm milk and a warm turkey sandwich. I find warm turkey to work better then cold. Nothing like a triptophan induced good night’s sleep!
