Has anyone had any luck at starting a business of genealogy? Doing family trees for people?
I have been doing research in genealogy for over 10 years and recently other people has wanted me to research their trees for them. I’m seriously thinking of starting this as a business but wanted to see if there is a real call for this sort of business before I start and invest money and time into it, so I’m looking for advice…serious answers only please.

Nearly every FH commerical and religious website offers this, every local and National archive, FH society and many archavists and FH teachers as well as private probate companies, in general it is a part time job as long as you are prepared to advertise and market it and you will get more business if you are involved with people researching such as teaching it………….however the expectation is that your reference all information back to record numbers ( not IGI or online collection numbers)……………..and yes many people do ask however they don’t really want to pay even the cost of your time, let alone the cetificates and record office visits travel and copies…lets just say it wouldn’t pay your rent/mortgage let alone make a living generally, unless you are do Bona Vacantia and even then if you don’t find you don’t get paid as it is a % of the inheritance and to make it worthwhile you need to do basic research to work out if it is over a certain amount and get the informtion before the competition does, which often means lots of travel, including abroad as the records are not on online databases…then yes as long as you have good researching, investigation and referencing skills you certainly can make a living plus
