   What kind of driving are you doing? If you live by yourself and work in an office as an accountant all you need is a small car. If you work construction and you have to meet with clients and drive off road you need an SUV. If the person has the SUV just for his ego than yes he is destroying the environment. It depends on the use of the vehicle.

   Disagree. What makes you think that a SUV is destroying the environment? There are cars that get worse gas mileage than SUV’s! With a SUV type station wagon you can make one trip to move stuff with a sedan you have to make several trips. Who is wasting fuel then?

   Don’t blame Global Warming on human beings – we just ain’t the cause! GW is a normal cycle we go through every now and then. GW is happening on Mars right now and there are no SUV’s to blame that on! Our earth has had many, many thousands of Global Warming periods in our past – all without any assist from man or SUV!

   In short both.

   Handling: as a Physics teacher and former engineer, there is certainly
   a safety and handling penalty for SUV’s. Can’t get past that. More weight makes stopping, changing direction and efficiency suffer.

   Environmental: this is an area fraught with politics, subjective opinion, error and bollocks. Modern Green-hero cars such as the Prius are as environmentally destructive over their life-cycle as any SUV on average. It is manly the batteries that do this, but these are a serious flaw in the “my Prius is environmentally sound” argument.

   There is a tendency towards people believing the false notion that thier big machine is safer than a well designed normal car. In small accidents, they might suffer less damage. In big accidents, they transfer energy to the occupants and what they hit. It might be all very well to say “Im alright Jack” but many people do drive with reckless abandon in SUV’s.

   EDIT

   As for humans not being responsible for Global Warming, I tend to agree. The science is still dodgy, despite all the spin and talk by the likes of Al Gore.
