Where do you get your supply of materials, etc. I have a designer mind and was wondering about the fashion industry. Whould a fashion designer school show me how to make clothes by hand, etc. I would probably be able to do the designing part. But, don’t know about actually making the clothes. I mean, if I wanted to start my own line, couldn’t I just design what I want with software. Then, have workers actually make the clothing, etc?

Im sorry, thats not how it works. It is very rare that you will make a living selling designs and having others make it for you. To have that work out for a career, you would have to be incredibly well know in the fashion industry. There are plenty of people who can draw and design(they are called head designers).

School will do this for you: You go there, they will help you discover your unique style, teach you the basics of color theory, drawing skills, and more. After you learn all that yo go onto the basic of design: sewing, patternmaking, tailoring, construction techniques, and draping. From there you spend the rest of your time honing your technique, your vision and your craft.

Where do I get my materials? Well, I live in NYC, so I go down to fashion ave and buy my fabric, etc there. You could buy yours at the local craft store. Walmart, or Jo-anns.

If you want to start your own clothing line, WITHOUT school(and actually, even with) you have to be willing to do all the grunt work. You would be at the beginning, YOU have to launch your own line, and once you get established and are making enough money to hire others or outsource THEN you can just sit back and design.

But like i said, thats only if youre sucessful.

    Hope this helps:
